Gotta love a good old-fashioned batch of fried bar food. And Arthur’s in Hyde Park served it up right.
I was there last week with my English department and the dining experience was about throwing caution to the wind. I split fried cheese (beer battered provolone), wonton poppers (cream cheese and jalapeños wontons), and buffalo bites (cheese and chicken wontons) with some very generous friends. Each was deliciously sinful, but I’d have to say the fried cheese was a fan favorite. I’m struggling here because I don’t want to use the following term, but gooey is the only word that comes to mind. The provolone is just a gooey gooey delight.
As if those weren’t enough, I went with the fish tacos. As we all know, I always want tacos and when fried fish is involved, it is hard for me to turn it down. But these were a killer little treat. The slaw was tangy and the remoulade added the right creamy touch. I considered saving the second one for later but decided to just go for it. The only thing I can say is that the black bean and corn salsa accompaniment was spicier than I could handle. I’m glad I didn’t preemptively dump it all over my tacos because I would have had to pick it all off after one bite. Other than that, the tacos were just fine.
So if you are looking for casual plans where you want to spread out and talk to people over indulgently tasty food, make it an Arthur’s date because I wouldn’t really call Arthur’s a bar with good food, but rather a place with good food that definitely feels like a bar.
