out at the aronoff for the illusionists

Kenny and I had an opportunity to attend the opening night of The Illusionists, Live from Broadway at the Aronoff, a quick one that is only running through Sunday of this weekend. The show was one that I both did and did not except to see, but in a word, it was definitely fun.

As we walked out, we both agreed that this is what we imagined seeing a Vegas magic show to be like. Complete with flamboyant host, who had a gay pun a plenty, audience participation that included both surprising and embarrassing exposure alike, and magic that spanned from card tricks to death-defying stunts.

The Illusionists themselves are a team of seven, whose titles include things like the Escapologist, the Daredevil, and the Trickster. Of them all, the most impressive was Colin Cloud, the Deductionist. His magic was that of the mind, where he was able to guess things like audience member pet names and careers, and did a trick with the playbill that made Kenny and I look directly at each other and nod with shocked impression. He made the whole show totally worth it for me.

While the show might be considered for “mature audiences” with its adult humor and punchlines, I do think it also doable for elementary aged kids. We were sitting around tons that night, and their actions, reactions, and delight made my skeptical mind dissolve back into the excitement of wonder. I stopped trying to figure it out, or look for the holes, and instead just sat back and enjoyed the show.

So if you are looking for something exciting to do in between basketball games this weekend, especially if you’ve got a magic lover in the house (a magic lover that is young or old), check out the above link for tickets to catch this one before it disappears!

special thanks to Broadway in Cincinnati for the tickets
