Tuesday evening, I had the opportunity to attend the media opening night of ONCE, which was both an honor and a treat. Being a fan of the movie from many years ago made the chance to see it play out on the stage even more exciting.
The storyline itself is sweet and endearing and heart-breaking. It is a love story that is not your typical love story. Clichés do not play out, situations are not perfect, the point is beyond some conflict with some resolution. It is about heart and passion and beautifully haunting music.
But beyond the storyline, ONCE is unlike most broadway shows. The orchestra remains on stage throughout the duration of the play, the lights do not dim until the entrance of the female lead, the audience is able to head onstage before and during intermission to purchase drinks while the ensemble cast continues to play their own instruments. All of this combines together to create a truly unique atmosphere and environment.
ONCE will run at the Aronoff until November 23rd. Again, this is a beautiful tale, told gorgeously through song, about finding the courage to take a chance. That, plus the energy that goes into creating an encapsulating experience, makes it a must see.
