out at the aronoff for kinky boots

January 18, 2016

Last last weekend was a joke, but so was the week that followed.

I don’t know about you guys, but the last two weeks were really just 2015 recovery/wrap up weeks for me, and it is only now that I feel ready for the new year to begin. This is most certainly due to my teaching schedule, with the semester ending and that mad dash to finish up projects and papers and grades and books and everything else that needs to happen before the final stretch can begin. But all’s been taken care of and I’m now inspired to take this year’s bull by the horns.

But this Monday’s motivational drive is also attributed to the fact that I saw the final performance of Kinky Boots on Sunday. I loved this musical so so much. It totally and completely lived up to the hype.

All I want to say is this – the message of Kinky Boots is about simple acceptance and that’s all there is to it. It is about accepting yourself and others. It is about being who you’ve always wanted to be. It is about following your dreams and destiny. Those messages, which can be so seemingly cliché and overplayed, are so not in this musical.

I also want to say this – I thought this was going to be super “progressive” because it is about a shoe company that saves itself by making boots for drag queens. But it is not. Like so not. There was honestly nothing particularly edgy or risqué about this musical or story. It was just plain fabulous and inspirational, as any musical should be. For example, during “Sex is in the Heel,” I found myself sitting there thinking, I’m going to get myself a nice pair of heels, I think it’s time to invest in a really nice pair of heels, I also think I want to write a book, and I am going to relearn a back handspring before I’m thirty! Seriously. I was like, it is time to achieve all you said you would! All of that excitement is exactly the point of this musical. And anyone and everyone can get behind that.

Kinky Boots run at the Aronoff is unfortunately done, but if you get a chance to catch this one somewhere, sometime, you definitely, one hundred percent should.
