Cincinnati Food + WIne Classic is just a few weeks away, so to get excited about the event, I planned a date with some girlfriends to check out Coppin’s at Hotel Covington, a participating restaurant that I had yet to try.
The girlfriend date night ended up being a little bar crawl, where we started at The Hannaford, did a pit stop at Braxton Brewing Co, and ended with a late night dinner at Coppin’s. That little local tour de cocktails set us up perfectly for the evening because by the time we landed at Coppin’s, we were hankering for a good meal, and a good meal is what we got.
The two gals I was with – Annie and Erin (coworker friends) – are the types to share, so since there were a few things on the menu that looked really good, we each ordered one to split amongst our trio. That’s the best way to dine in my opinion.
My pick was the shrimp and grits. It is pretty impossible for me not to order shrimp when it is in front of me, so this was really no surprise. Now in true southern indulgent fashion, these shrimp and grits were rich and creamy, and came with a seriously salty kick of thick chops of chorizo, which of course made for the best bite. The egg on top was also a smothery treat so there was lots of rich ooey goo to scoop together deliciously.
My friend Erin ordered the classic burger and fries for us all. This burger was the right kind of elevated burger, with cheese that was melting off the sides upon delivery, and flavorful juices that made it a good kind of soaky mess. If you are looking for something that you know will hit the spot, look no further than this burger.
However, the winner of the night was Annie’s fried chicken. Like the burger, this was not some regular old fried chicken. This was delicious fried chicken served with cucumber and watermelon, so there were light bites alongside crispy-crispy fried chicken bites. Furthermore, there was also hot sauce and tzatziki to dip it all in, which was a surprising and amazing twist. If you are only going to get one of the three above, I’d definitely gun for this one (even though you can’t go wrong with the others).
