I love seafood (did you all know that?) and a few spots in OTR feature that biz so naturally I was dying to stop by. The actual point of this night was for the mussels at Zula and while we did ultimately have that for dinner, I’m sad to report that we found it all to be super average. Nothing was that flavorful so I can’t see myself really caring to go back. I hate that because their space was awesome and the staff was super friendly but the food just didn’t follow through.
So because the plan was to dine at Zula, we opted to just sit at the bar at Anchor across the street for a cocktail and some oysters. The whole deal was awesome and in retrospect, we should have been planted there all night. Super cool interior, super cool bartender, super delicious oysters, I was super into it. We trusted the bartender to choose a variety of oysters for us so I can’t tell you which ones were the best, but I mean, an oyster is an oyster is an oyster. But one thing I did like is that along with cocktail sauce and horseradish was some pickled shallots and the combo of all three was amazing.
All that, plus my Gone Fishing (tito’s vodka, grapefruit radler, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, thai basil, house rhubarb bitters) and Kenny’s Sting Ray (buffalo trace bourbon, carpano antica, lime juice, ginger syrup) made for one excellent little kickoff for one super fun date night that only escalated from there.
